L'Oreal ID Artist UK team member Jak Hall has released his first collection, Debut. The stylist made headlines with his father, celebrity stylist Jason Hall, last year when they became the first father-son duo nominated as finalists for the British Hairdressing Awards — Jak for Newcomer of the Year, and Jason for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year.
Here is a Q&A with the Scotland-born stylist:
Where did your interest in hairdressing spark?
It started when I was 15 and I began working in the salon to make some money. I cut one of my friends' hair and really enjoyed it.
What’s been the journey to where you are now?
I left school when I was 17 to start my training and start working full time. I assisted my dad on different shows and photo shoots to gain some valuable experience, which I now really appreciate.
What is the best part of the career you’re following?
I really enjoy working behind the scenes on photo shoots or on a fashion show, but my first love is servicing my clients in the salon.
You were awarded a coveted finalist position in the British Hairdressing Awards, for Newcomer Of The Year — what inspired your entry?
It was with working on the past photo shoots with my dad and other hairstylists that inspired me to want to do a shoot of my own. I’ve been around the process for a number of years, however, this was special — all on me.
Are there any takeaways from entering the British Hairdressing Awards?
Mostly how important it is to have a good team to help and give you advice when you’re shooting your looks for what will be your collection. The process needs to be thought through, even sketching it, to create the story you want to tell.
Name 3 styling tools or products you can’t live without.
My scissors, clippers, and comb, because those are essential for what I love doing.
