How To: Create Apartment 7A's Iconic Updo

The new movie Apartment 7A, set in 1965 in New York City, has people talking as much about its iconic fashion and styling as its bone-chilling plot.

The psychological thriller is a prequel to the 1968 horror classic Rosemary’s Baby. It stars Julia Garner as Terry Gionoffrio, a struggling young dancer who becomes injured and is drawn in by dark forces promising her fame.

In the suspenseful final scene, Terry's hair is an iconic 60’s bouffant updo — a perfect Halloween costume when paired with dance attire or thrifted 60’s garb!

Stylist and educator Anna Peters, a Sam Villa ArTeam member and owner of re:TREAT Color + Hair Design and Studio in Clovis, CA, was inspired to recreate the look after seeing the film.

“This 60’s Broadway-style look is from the final dance scene," Peters says. "It's telling of today’s modern messy twists, with volume coming back to the top of the head and around the face."

Halloween Hair

Step by Step

  1. Flat iron 2-to-3-inch horizontal sections at the root through the crown area to create volume.
  2. Backcomb sections of hair at the top back of head, teasing hair for mega volume and lift.
  3. Smooth hair over backcombed section, then pin hair half up with two bobby pins attached to an elastic. Slide one pin in horizontally to secure hair on one side, then pull elastic across to opposite side and slide the other pin in to secure.
  4. Gather the rest of hair at center back, twisting up to meet and cover previous elastic. Tuck ends under and pin in place to secure.
  5. Pinch and style fringe for finishing touches on the modern-day thrilling bouffant style.
