Celebrity stylist and educator Monaè Everett created Maleah Joi Moon’s sculptured hairstyle for the singer/ actress’ first Met Gala appearance in 2024.
Moon, currently starring in Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen on Broadway, drew flashbulbs in a custom Collina Strada gown with a long, dramatic train, with makeup by LB Charles.
Everett gave her sculptured modern-day finger waves to complement the floral design of the dress, in keeping with the 2024 Met Gala theme “The Garden of Time.”
“We channeled the elegance of the 1920s with a sleek hairstyle that revived the era's iconic finger waves,” says Everett, who posted a pre-gala BTS video on Instagram.
“We selected top-notch products from Curls to enhance and define Maleah's natural hair texture. Additionally, we used the precision of a Denman Brush to meticulously sculpt the waves, marrying classic style with modern sophistication.
“This hairstyle not only highlights Maleah's exquisite features,” Everett says, “but also echoes the gala's theme of reawakening timeless elegance, merging historical inspiration with contemporary fashion.”
Step-by-Step
1. Prep and Moisturize.
Apply Blueberry Bliss Aloe & Blueberry Juice Moisturizer to damp hair. This will add shine, help prevent breakage, and strengthen the strands.
2. Seal In Moisture.
Add a drop of Blueberry & Mint Hair and Scalp Strengthening Oil to lock in moisture, ensuring hair remains hydrated and fortified.
3. Set the Foundation.
Apply Blueberry Bliss Repair & Grow Sculpting Mousse to the hair.
Proceed with a wrap setting technique on the entire head to create a smooth and firm base for the hairstyle.
4. Smooth.
Use the Denman Brush Edge Tamer to meticulously smooth down the cropped sides and back of the head.
5. Dry.
Dry hair thoroughly using the Dyson Supersonic blow dryer.
6. Add Texture.
After drying, reapply a drop of Blueberry & Mint Hair and Scalp Strengthening Oil.
Loosen the wrap set by gently blow-drying the hair with the Denman Brush D4 Original 9 Row Styler.
Create loose curls throughout the hair using a small flat iron to add volume and movement.
7. Enhance the Style.
Add hair extensions at the hairline to increase length and fullness.
Smooth the hair into waves around the face using Blueberry Bliss Control Paste for precision.
8. Detailing and Final Touches.
Apply Control Paste to slick down the edges and sculpt large, defined waves.
Use the Denman D81M Style & Shine Brush to sleek all the hair down, enhancing the smoothness and shine.
“This methodical approach ensures each step builds upon the last, resulting in a glamorous and polished final look perfect for any red-carpet event,” Everett says.
Monaè Everett will be teaching advanced classes on high-end and photoshoot styling in June at the International Beauty Show-Las Vegas.
