Celebrity stylist Irinel De León paired Karlie Kloss' glittering Swarovski gown with a timeless low knotted chignon for the 2024 Met Gala.
“We wanted to keep the hair a little more on the simple side because of the intricate detail in the dress," De León says.
"The dress is embellished with Swarovski crystals throughout, with flowers draping down the length of the dress; therefore we wanted the hair to feel soft, whimsical, yet polished.
"The low chignon with wispy pieces around the face and ears add a bit of softness to the look.”
Step by Step:
- Prep damp hair with Living Proof Thickening Blow-Dry Cream from mid-lengths to ends.
- On the roots, apply Living Proof Full Volume & Root-Lifting Spray. Add a few pumps throughout the scalp for volume and heat protection.
- Section the hair and blow-dry with airflow and heat settings on high. (De León used a Dyson Supersonic r Professional Hairdryer with the Concentrator attachment.)
- Clip extensions into the hair in sections. (De León used The Hair Shop 18” Clip In Extensions in the colors #3 and #4). "Tease small sections where the clips will be placed, and spray the teased section with Living Proof Style Lab Flex Hairspray and attach the clip-ins," De León says. "I like to mix the colors, since Karlie has some natural dimension in her hair."
- Cut extensions to the desired length using a razor or shears.
- Prep dry hair with the Flex Hairspray. Then, using a straightener at 410 degrees, add minimal blowout-like bends in the hair, keeping the wrist a little bent, to add tension and body to the hair.
- Set each section into Velcro rollers to cool down.
- Diffuse the Velcro rollers on cool until hair has cooled down completely.
- Remove rollers and spray the hair with Living Proof Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray.
- Create a middle part and rake the hair back into a low ponytail. Secure with an elastic.
- Create a simple knot chignon by forming a loop, securing it with pins and wrapping the ends. De León used velvet French hair pins.
- Finish with Flex Hairspray.
