Textured hair expert Najah Aziz is all about curly bangs right now. “If you have the texture, the cut and the color, you don’t need to do anything else to your hair,” she tells us. Here, Aziz takes the fear out of textured hair, and gives her best step-by-steps for cutting curly bangs. And, if you like what you see, check out her class at IBS Las Vegas this June.

- Make sure the hair is completely dry.
- Part the hair where the comb leaves the hairline (about 1 inch from the hairline). The part should run parallel to the hairline.
- Comb hair down with a wide-tooth comb and clip everything else away with large duck bill clips. If you want bangs to frame your face, pull hair to opposite sides and cut from there.
- Cut with a sharp pair of shears slightly, so they are just opening and closing down on curl. Cut each curl individually on a slant. Always allow extra length before cutting using the Point-cut your bangs using small snips (one curl at a time) to ensure your best bang cut. Comb bang curls again to make sure you have the desired look.
- The most important thing is to treat each curl in the bangs individually. They sometimes have their own mind!

My IBS Las Vegas class in 5 words:
Innovative, enlightening, outside the box, energetic and inspiring.
What can attendees expect to take away from my class:
Attendees will leave without a fear of textured hair and will be able to style that type of client in the salon. I think that this is going to challenge a lot of the stylists to think outside of the box when it comes to doing textured, short hair. The challenge is how do we calm this hair down and make it trendy—we’ll be doing a lot of that in my classes.
Proudest moment as an educator:
I had a hairstylist come up to me at a hair show and she just started crying and hugging me and said, “You inspire me so much—I’ve opened a salon, I’ve built amazing clientele just based on the classes I’ve taken with you, and you just keep inspiring me.” That was really touching for me.
When I’m not teaching my class, you’ll find me:
On the floor, like a kid in a candy store. I’m always looking for something new. I’ll be all over trying to find the latest products, and how they enhance what I do behind the chair. If I see a really good demonstration, and I see what the product is doing to the hair, then I will probably try it. There’s so much neat stuff, with all the bells and whistles, and as hairstylists we like shiny things and things that fly. I’ll be chasing all that stuff at the show.
Why curly bangs are hot right now:
People are just now starting to just embrace their natural texture. We spend so much money trying to fight to get it straight, and it takes so much time. Now we just want easy, we want relaxed, we want to embrace what we are naturally born with, and to save a lot of time. It’s also a really cool look for summer.
