It's difficult to imagine Nick Stenson having the time to take on another beauty venture as he's already VP of Salon Services & Trend for Ulta Beauty and the Artistic Director for Matrix, but that's exactly what he's done. Most recently the founder of a new brush line called Curious Brushes, a multi-faceted collection of brushes that's suitable for both the professional and the consumer, Stenson is taking the industry by storm, and he's only just getting started. American Salon sat down with Stenson to get the skinny on the one-of-a-kind brushes and hear more about his plans for the future.
On top of everything else you have going on, what prompted the idea for a brush line?
Almost three years ago I started the journey of creating my own brushes. I really wanted to create a line of brushes that any professional could use on their guests, and any consumer could use on themselves to create the perfect look, and so Curious Brushes was born.
What makes these brushes different than others on the market?
The combination of fibers for each of the brushes is like nothing else on the market today. The brushes are not only easy to use, but they also create the perfect amount of tension while building shine into the blowout. Your client's hair will look healthier than ever when you're done.
There are three brushes in your collection. What is each brush best used for?
The Cushion Brush is what I call the “hero”—it can be used for volume at the root, detangling, blowing out hair from curly to straight, teasing and detailing. I really can’t live without when on set. The Extra Large Round Brush and Medium Round Brush each offer the desired amount of tension thanks to their patented configuration of nylon and natural fiber bristles.
What does the future look like for Curious? Do you plan to expand the line?
My goal is to find gaps in the marketplace and create products that make peoples' lives easier, help their hair look its very best and create solutions for issues that people have with their hair. I can’t give too much away just yet, but I will say I’m working on some exciting things that I plan to release next year. Can’t wait to share!
