How To: Style an "Old Money" Bob

As shows such as “Saltburn,” “Succession,” and “The White Lotus” fuel an obsession with old money and all the benefits and challenges that come with it, stylists all over are being asked to reproduce trending looks inspired by the characters.

Justin Michael Parra, Sam Villa Ambassador and stylist at La Bella Salon & Beauty Lounge, has been adding that classic voluminous finish to many looks, including his “Old Money" Bob.

“To me, old money means lots of volume around the face and a very voluptuous silhouette,” Parra says. “It’s very sexy, powerful, and bold, but it takes some styling chops to achieve.”

"The trick is all in the product and tools," he says.

Check out the step-by-step for sectioning and setting to create maximum volume and smoothness needed for an upper-crust, blue-blood finish. Then, watch the tutorial below!

Sectioning & Iron Work

Front

  • Take a Mohawk section above the parietal ridge and clip.
  •  Take a section in front of ear (all hair falling on or in front of shoulder) and clip.
  •  Take a section behind the ear (hair with root growing towards the back of shoulder) and clip.

Back

  • Take a section no bigger than the flat iron, apply thermal spray, and comb to smooth.
  • Use the fine teeth of the cutting comb and come in from underneath the section. Pass the flat iron 2-3 times to heat and activate the product, then compress with tight elevation and twist towards body allowing hair to be heated to create the curl pattern.
  • Use tail comb to tuck curl neatly around finger, and clip on base to cool or wrap around a Velcro roller and clip to cool.

Sides

  • Take horizontal sections to build volume that wraps around face, creating a round shape that tucks under the chin.

Top

  • Use horizontal sections in the Mohawk area, but change to a larger roller to create a looser wave pattern with more flow on the longer hair strands.

Styling

  • Once entire head is set, let it cool for 10-20 minutes to give hair enough time for the cuticle to cool and close.
  • Spray with Brushable Hairspray and remove clips and rollers. The roundness right off that base is immediately apparent and achieved by allowing the curl to cool elevated off its natural state.
  • Spray a paddle brush with Control Addict and brush away from face to create desired shape with max body around the face and curving in just under the chin.
