With two salon locations in CA, Dreamhttps://dghair.com/Girls was ready for the next step, and launched a product line—at the very start of the pandemic. It found instant success, due to salon closures and its signature program: the Healthy Hair Care System. Co-founders Tonya Thompson and Sharie Wilson fill us in on their story, hero products and how the program is debunking the myth that Black women can't grow long, healthy hair.
Why did you launch the DreamGirls product line and the Healthy Hair Care System?
From the start, we’ve always wanted to help women. The goals of DreamGirls is to break the stereotype that black women can’t have long, natural hair, and to help build their confidence in knowing that they can do anything! We created our product line due to wish for women nationwide to join our Healthy Hair Care Program we have at our salon. We wanted to provide them with access to the same products and steps we use at our salons so that they could achieve amazing results at home.
Since launch, our sales increased as a result of salon closures that left many women seeking guidance on how to care for their hair at home.
We emphasize the importance of improving the overall health of our customers’ hair and scalps as well as retaining the increased length and density as their hair continues to grow.
What is the Healthy Hair Care System?
The Healthy Hair Care System kit has five steps that walk clients through how to properly treat and stimulate their scalp. This ensure that their hair is prepped for optimal health. The kit includes our TLC Comb-Out Treatment to help prevent breakage when detangling, Renewing Shampoo and Conditioner that gives an intense scalp and hair cleanse to restore moisture, Revival Deep Treatment to promote growth, elasticity, strength and hydration, and our True Essence Oil, which stimulates follicles to promote growth in thinning areas and bald spots.
What are the hero products?
The TLC Comb-Out Treatment is our secret to detangling hair and retaining your hair’s length and density coming out of your protective style.The Revival Deep Treatment feels amazing on the scalp and smoothes and softens the hair, making it more manageable. There is a noticeable difference in the strength and elasticity of the hair’s natural pattern.
Can you share the secret ingredients and how they work?
We utilize natural ingredients to aid with stimulating the scalp and hair follicles, such as green tea, fenugreek, tea tree Oil, lavender oil and caffeine.
What makes DreamGirls different from other products on the market?
We took the time to make our Healthy Hair Care System and overall brand about teaching customers that it’s not just about the hair growth. We give a series of instructions and steps they need to follow to not only grow their hair, but to keep that growth and maintain hair health long-term.
We are also breaking stereotypes that black women are not being able to have long, natural healthy hair, and that they have to wear braids or a weave.
Anything new coming soon?
We are currently working on products focused more on moisture, specifically a moisturizing shampoo and a leave-in conditioner. We're also planning to add bigger bottles for purchase to accommodate salons who want to use our products.
What are your top tips for maintaining healthy hair?
The key to healthy hair is a healthy scalp. When your scalp is clean and free of any build-up including dandruff, natural oils, and excessive amounts of product for example, it leaves an environment that promotes growth. Otherwise, your growth may be delayed, which will lead to frustration. Remember: The scalp is your foundation for hair growth, so it’s very important to take care of it.
Also, don’t give up on your hair, because we certainly haven’t! We highly recommend wearing some type of protective style to give your hair a break from everyday wear and tear.
