It's hard to believe the year is more than half over. Throughout the last seven months, we've had so much fun sharing the work of some of the best stylists and better yet, watching their work come to life in our frequent how-to videos. Here's a look at five how-to videos that have garnered the most attention from AmericanSalon.com viewers since January.
Classic Bob
Bobs, lobs, or mobs—whatever type suits your fancy, we can't get enough of the chic and edgy hairstyle. In this video, Hairbrained brought in Paul Mitchell Educator Julian Perlingiero (@julianperl) to demonstrate his Sassoon-influenced technique for cutting a classic bob. Truth be told, the bob may be one of the basic forms in cutting, yet it remains one of the most difficult haircuts to master. Perlingiero breaks down the steps for you here.
Short Shag Cut
Between summer heat and busy lives, it's no surprise that some ladies want to keep their hair short and manageable. In this how-to, one of our favorites, Global Artistic Ambassador for Pureology Serious Colour Care Ruth Roche (@ruthroche) highlights specific techniques to keep your short hair guests on trend. She creates a short shag with a square shape and rounded perimeter, and then texturizes to create the iconic separation and movement. Watch the video here.
Firefly Cut
The firefly cut has been around for decades—it peaked in the 1970's to be exact. More than 40 years later, the classic cut is still leaving its mark. In this video, Colorproof's International Creative Director Phillip Wilson (@phillipwilsoncp) joined American Salon for a Facebook Live demonstration of the moveable and full-bodied cut.
5 Looks, 1 Cut
You read that right: you can get five different looks from this one versatile cut. What could be better? In this how-to video, salon owner Doug McCoy (@douglas_mccoy72) of House of POp Salon in Spokane, WA shows how one cut can go from carefree and casual to soft and playful and gritty and edgy to rock and roll—all with a few basic styling tools.
Banded Bohemian
One of our most frequented topics is the incredible versatility of braids. Whether your client is looking for a wedding hairstyle or an everyday wearable style, braids provide endless options. In this video, Ruth Roche creates a braid alternative that’s pulled apart and ruched. The bands secure the style, which makes it easy to wear, and the ruching adds volume and shape.
