Allowing natural grey to take over can be very empowering for some, and the biggest nightmare for others. Sam Villa, co-founder and chief creative officer of Sam Villa and global artistic ambassador for Redken, gives tips to share with guests on how to embrace natural gray, as well as tricks to hide it.
Embracing Grey
- Texturize: Diffusing blunt lines in coarse, stiff, grey hair creates softness and delicate shapes. Wisps of texture can frame the face and add body to fine hair and movement to dense hair.
- Fringe: Long soft-sweeping fringe magically adds a youthful feel by disguising lines in the forehead and around the eyes. Cut the longer portion of the fringe to the best feature (eyes, chin or cheekbone).
- Volume: Use a texturizing iron, like the Sam Villa Signature Series Textur Professional Texturizing Iron, to add volume for a modern undone style. Place the iron at the root and hold with tension for 3 counts. It adds fullness to finer hair, especially in the areas where hair is sparse.
The Big Coverup
- Zigzag Part: Hide that grey with a creative part. Place a comb at the front hairline and carve out a zigzag line on the scalp, it’s a fresh look and helps blend regrowth.
- Go Sleek: Camouflage greys by styling hair when wet, it gives the illusion of darker hair. Towel-dry and apply a gel or paste, like Redken Rough Paste 12, gather hair in a ponytail or bun and finish with a hairspray to hold in place.
- Mix it Up: Gray hair tends to be more prominent on the top of the head and at the hairline, with darker strands underneath. Use a curling wand to create loose youthful curls (try the Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron & Wand) to direct hair in all different directions around the head. In the front, guide hair away from the face to allow the darker hair from underneath to peek through. The result is beautiful ribbons of different shades of silver in each curl.
