Anxiety and stress can wreak havoc on our bodies and minds. Stress can put the body into a fight or flight mode and creates tension in muscles, a rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure and suppresses the immune system, according to medical professionals, and frequently going into a stress-mode can cause headaches, panic attacks, irritability, depression and an increased risk of heart attacks.
There is some research that points to using breathe to manage stress, like the 4-7-8 breathing technique, which can be done anywhere – whether you’re at the grocery store or at work, or even in bed when you can’t fall asleep.
4-7-8 Breathing Technique
- Breathe in quickly through your nose for a count of four seconds.
- Hold your breath for seven seconds
- Breathe out forcefully through your mouth for eight seconds.
