Amika Lead Pro Educator Amanda Elaine Killen (@stylistamandaelaine) created a beautiful figure-8 braid with an editorial vibe, live from Premiere Orlando! Here, find out how to recreate the look. - Prep hair with detailed cornrows along the right side of the head. For this look, hair will be fed from the left side of the head. The model's hair texture is 3b, with more coily texture underneath.
- Stretch and elongate the curls by brushing. Dampen hair with water and add a little bit of Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream through the hair for some moisture.
- Follow up with Curl Corps Defining Gel. The soy proteins are beneficial for the hair, and allow for the shaping and manipulating of curls.
- Hand positioning is very important for a figure-8 braid. The position that gives the most success is with the pinkies toward the head and the thumb and index finger facing upward for leverage.
- Leave some volume in the front section. Start the figure-8 braid with two stationary strands. These two strands never have anything added to them. Again, make sure pinkies are facing the head when braiding, and pick up hair with your index finger and thumb.
- Take a small section from the left side of the head. Use a grooming brush to sleek the side. Continue into figure 8 motion for braid.
- Take another small section from the left side of the head and continue figure 8 braid. Add water as needed for manageability.
- Once you reach the nape, switch to a three-strand braid. Braid tightly.
- Tie the end of the braid with an elastic, then roll it onto itself and secure with an elastic. Tuck the ball braid behind the figure-8 braid.
- Fix up the front and add volume with your fingers where needed. Gently rub baby hairs free.
- Use a little Headstrong Hairspray on a brush and comb over flyaways.
