With approximately 2 million apps available in the Apple App Store, there’s something to suit everyone’s fancy—hairstylists included. Quick to take notice was Matrix, who was one of the first out of the gate to create an app that caters to the professional beauty community. Developed in 2015, the app features a formulation tool, virtual makeovers, a product catalog and easy access to Matrix’s social media accounts. Plus, it’s free to download and simple to sign up as a salon owner, stylist, educator or cosmetology student.
“The accuracy of the app has been a huge help during salon consultations,” says Nick Stenson (@nickstenson), Matrix artistic director. “As haircolor continues to evolve into more vibrant tones, clients are asking stylists for a precise visual of what a color will look like with their face shape and tone.” Thanks to the app’s convenience and simplicity, a stylist can pull out their phone, snap a quick selfie and show the client an example in real-time.
Years after its initial launch, the Matrix Professional app has been continually updated with innovative technology. Through a recent partnership with ModiFace, an augmented reality company, the app is now equipped with the latest Matrix color range, including all SoColor Cult shades, allowing stylists to provide the most realistic “try on” services for their clients. “It’s like having an assistant in the palm of your hand,” says Philip Wolff (@philipwolffhair), Matrix ambassador and artist.
Although apps have taken some of the guess work out of the salon consultation process, digital tools don’t minimize the importance of the face-to-face consultation. “The Matrix app simply enhances the guests’ experience and gives more credibility to the stylist and colorist,” Stenson says. “Even though digital tools can fuel inspiration during the consultation, I prefer to connect with my clients in person to get a true sense of who they are and provide the best results possible,” adds Wolff.
