How To: Cut "Invisible Texture" Into Hair

Achieving natural movement in hair can feel like an elusive goal due to traditional texturizing techniques sometimes leaving obvious layers or blunt ends within the hair. Master stylist Ellen Devine, a Sam Villa ArTeam member, has the solution — invisible texturizing.

“My most-used technique behind the chair is invisible texturizing. It texturizes hair from within without any visible signs of cutting, so it creates lots of beautiful movement,” Devine says.

“We often just texturize the ends, but that type of texturizing blends hair, versus cutting the mid-section which makes it move. So, when creating invisible texture focus on the mid-section of the hair,” she says.

This technique can be done with a texturizing shear or a blunt shear.

  • Select a small section of hair that needs de-bulking or added movement.
  • Start in the middle of the section and cut from the inside out.

Tool of Choice

Devine recommends the Sam Villa Signature Series InvisiBlend Shear for this technique. “It’s one of most versatile shears to have in your case as hairstylist," she says. "It’s unique in that it has 23 convex teeth that cut each hair from short to long, removing bulk and creating a natural movement in the hair while leaving no harsh lines."
