How To: Create a Micro Fringe

A micro fringe is an extremely short, statement-making look for bangs that fall just an inch or two below the hairline. They can be soft and wispy or blunt and bold, and pair well with multiple hair textures and lengths.

Micro fringes and other short bangs expose more of the face, emphasizing facial features.

“Fringes are a significant trend in 2024, playing a crucial role in defining a haircut's personality," says Teresa Romero, Creative Director for Sam Villa and Artistic/Education Director for Jose Luis Salon in Austin, TX.

"Understanding how to create a micro fringe requires exploring various types," she says.

"Where we place a fringe will draw attention to a facial feature or soften them. Every cut matters, from tool handling to technique application, all converging in the central area of the face.”

Step by Step: Cutting a Micro Fringe

Prep is key. "Cutting on dry hair can save time and make it easier to personalize, as hair behaves differently wet versus dry," Romero says.

1. Section out a 1- to 2-inch-deep section and secure the remaining hair out of the way. Blow-dry fringe area from root through ends to the right, then the left and finally all forward using a wide cutting comb.

2. With blow dryer held above head, dry fringe forward and flat against the head. Place a hand over the section and allow hair to cool for maximum control, making it easier to cut.

3. Place comb against the forehead to visualize where to place the fringe.  Divide the section in half and bring to the center of the forehead to shallow point cut.

4. Release and shape the corners.

5. Drop the top section and secure with a hair grip. This hands-free approach allows for gentle control of the section, providing the opportunity to refine the fringe. (Romero is using Sam Villa Classic Series Shears).
