Wellness Tip of the Week: Gratitude

During these hard times, as much as we might try, it’s tough not to feel stressed, insecure and fearful of what the future holds. While it’s important to acknowledge and assess your feelings, ruminating over them can send you into a downwards spiral of negativity.

One simple way to start boosting your happiness is to cultivate gratitude. The textbook definition of gratitude is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. A great way to cultivate gratitude is by keeping a gratitude journal.

Each morning and/or evening before you go to bed, write down five things that make you feel happy and appreciative. These things don’t have to be extravagant – they can be simple, like a cup of tea or a walk in the park or cuddling with your pet. The goal is to collect these things that make you feel warm and fuzzy each day. At the end of the week, review all the things you wrote down. This will help you realize how many wonderful things are in your life and will boost your happiness. Over time, this gratitude journal exercise offers huge benefits, including improved self-esteem, better sleep, lower blood pressure and stress and more joyful days.
