Earlier this week, California's Governor Newsom ordered salons in 30 counties to close for a second time due to COVID-19 spikes. Now, stylists are petitioning to allow outdoor salons until indoor business can resume.
Amber O'hara, an Orange County-based stylist and owner of Gold and Braid Salon, was one of many affected by the recent mandate. O'Hara took to Instagram to share a change.org petition she started asking the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology for permission to operate outdoors, something that is currently not permitted under the state's cosmetology guidelines. "We need options to pivot," O'Hara wrote in the petition. "This won't be our last shut down and we need to be able to operate at some capacity."
"Section 7317 of the Business and Professions Code requires that all barbering, cosmetology and electology services be performed in a licensed establishment. Therefore, establishments that are within the specified counties must close immediately and not offer any services (including any outdoor services)," the Board shared in a Facebook post on July 13.
