As the beauty industry continues to evolve, so too does the salon model. In response to shifts in the professional beauty industry toward independent artistry and more autonomy for the stylist, Dharmendra and Aarti Manwani, who hail from the salon and tech industries respectively, launched Artist on Go.
With Artist on Go stylists can rent chairs in premiere salons for an hour, a day, a week or a month wherein they can execute the services they choose while making their full commission. This model is designed to empower stylists to set their own hours, service menus and pricing, and also allows salon owners to monetize empty chairs through renting.
After a tough few years during the pandemic, many stylists lost their jobs at salons due to shut downs and permanent closures, and many owners lost stylists due to lifestyle changes. Artist On Go is a solution to that, and fosters a mutually beneficial business relationship between owner and stylist. On a dual vetting system, the program ensures the stylists and the salons are a good fit.
"The traditional salon model has become outdated, especially post COVID as artists and salons are seeking more flexibility,” says Pat Parenty, former president of L’Oreal. “Artist On Go has built a modern, easy-to-use platform that not only works better for both salon owners and independent stylists but helps them earn more income. In my view this is changing the industry for the better.”
Antonio Prieto, a salon owner who is a member of Artist On Go, says the solution is perfect for his needs. Prieto formerly worked with Toni & Guy in London in the 1980s, became the art director and traveled with Anthony Mascolo before he landed in New York to work with and assist Guido Palau. As he built his clientele, he opened his own salon. But as the industry changed in the past three or four years, he felt like he was going against the current operating on a traditional salon model. "The traditional structure of the business doesn't necessarily work for today's generation," he said. "You have to evolve and change with it."
"Artist on Go is a tool that helps me and saves me a lot of time—the heavy lifting is done by Artist on Go," he adds. "They understand who we are, and the people that they send are a good fit for me."
