When conceptualizing their first salon, Kate Convery and Jamie Millmather knew they wanted to take a holistic approach and create a unique experience for clients.
The pair signed the lease to their dream space and opened Love Culture in Providence, RI, in February 2019. The space itself allows for healing energy, providing clients with a positive experience they’ll remember. “Creating that kind of energy is important to us,” says Millmather, a Wella Master Color Expert and Wella Brand Educator. “What we do is more than just changing someone’s look—it’s about connecting with someone, learning about them and empowering them to take on life with a positive and beautiful outlook.”
Inside, the space features over 200 plants, an abundance of crystals and even a selenite crystal wall that the pair built themselves for healing energy. The salon also houses large murals that were created by local artists. The unique and quirky feeling combined with a sanctuary-like vibe is an aesthetic that Convery and Millmather worked hard to create. While the main focus at Love Culture is coloring and cutting (Convery specializes in straight razor cutting and trained at Arrojo and Bumble and bumble), it also offers hair therapy treatments and up-styling for special events.
One special feature of Love Culture is that it’s a Green Circle Salon. The salon not only provides products that are good for the hair, but good for the environment as well. The haircare found inside Love Culture features sustainable packaging and ingredients, and the staff follows Green Circle Salon guidelines like recycling hair, foils, excess color and color tubes, which get sent to Green Circle to be upcycled. Additionally, it keeps regular recycling bins for glass, plastic and cardboard. “We feel as though we have a responsibility as stylists to reduce our ecological footprint,” Millmather says. “We work with chemicals and some of the tools of the trade create a lot of additional waste. Once you start paying attention to how much waste your salon produces it will motivate you to make that change.”
